New algorithm for enhanced train tracking

Signalbox’s Journey Detection software covers the whole of Great Britain’s rail network.

Signalbox has recently begun to roll out a new type of advanced mathematical algorithm that optimises Signalbox’s journey detection capability for Britain’s rail network.  While Signalbox’s technology is already able to detect train journeys anywhere in Great Britain, this new type of algorithm offers enhanced performance in a number of areas, including:

  • Lower battery consumption, so that journey detection can be accomplished with minimal energy, reducing battery drain and allowing low power-mode operation.

  • Optimal detection accuracy, so that the vast majority of rail journeys can be detected, along with key details like the origin, the destination and the train service.

  • Device-agnostic capability, to allow journey detection on different types of devices, including iPhones, Android-based smartphones, tablets and IoT devices.

The algorithm works by deploying a sophisticated network of Geocookies™, which are virtual spatial-temporal bounding boxes invented by Signalbox. The system works for all passenger journeys, requires no hardware, and adapts to the environment to optimise detection performance while minimising battery consumption.

Signalbox’s Journey Detection technology is used for a range of applications, including:

  • Train information, to provide information about the train’s schedule, catering service, train dividing alerts and real-time journey updates.

  • Journey sharing, to share journey details and arrival times with friends, family and taxi companies to enable seamless connections.

  • Delay repay, to automatically compensate passengers for delays and validate journeys to prevent fraudulent claims.

  • Ticketless travel, to detect journeys in real-time to automate payments, reward customer loyalty and enable seamless travel.

Using Signalbox’s technology for delay repay, means that passengers can be automatically notified in real-time when their train is delayed beyond the threshold that entitles them to compensation.  The technology is integrated into apps belonging to train companies and ticket retailers to allow them to offer this new kind of service.

Train travel has been exceptionally low throughout the pandemic and the number of passenger journeys has been a fraction of pre-pandemic levels.  As a result, there has never been a more acute need for new innovations that will encourage passengers back onto the network. One of the most effective ways to improve rail transport is by introducing the new types of services enabled by Signalbox API.

Signalbox’s advanced journey detection capability can be integrated into smartphone apps with just a few lines of code and covers the whole of Great Britain.
